Although the 2+ hour set was devoted largely to new material, there was a special treat planned for fans of his earlier work. "Those of you who came just to hear the new stuff, the Blueprint stuff, can leave now and maybe beat traffic, or you can stay and learn something," the rapper declared before launching into a medley of hits off his 1996 classic debut album "Reasonable Doubt".

The Viper Room was possessed on Monday and Tuesday, or rather controlled by a woman possessed. Janelle Monae, the funky r&b songstress, brought her funktified "future" music and tore the place up. On her debut EP, "Metropolis The Chase Suite" she plays the part of Cindi Mayweather, an alien cyborg who is hunted for failing in love with a human. In real life she plays the part of Janelle Monae, an alien who is hunted for making extremely good music that humans dance to. It is hard not to be impressed with this Big Boi protege (he produced both "Metropolis: and the forthcoming "ArchAndroid") as she commands attention, not just with her incredible energy but more importantly her stellar voice. There is no doubt she will return to LA with her brand of alien motown-funk, but it won't be somewhere as small as the Viper Room.

LOS ANGELES (Nov 17, 2009) -- Newly minted rock supergroup, Them Crooked Vultures, completely annihilated the Wiltern Theatre Tuesday night. The Vultures are Dave Grohl from Nirvana/Foo Fighters fame, Frontman Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age and one of the greatest bass guitarists ever from one of the greatest bands ever, John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin. The music, a blend of dirty bluesy rock, never let up during the course of the 14 song set. The ghosts of Zeppelin past are apparent within the frame work of the Vultures. Both Grohl and Homme have never tried to hide their admiration and respect for Zeppelin in their respective "day jobs" but the addition of Jones takes admiration to a different level. Reinterpretation and continuance, if you will, of the spirit of Led Zeppelin. Basically, this shit rocks...hard...and loud!

From The Streets Of Iran featuring graffiti-based works on paper by urban artists from Iran: ICY, SOT, FRZ, MAD, and CK1.
Crewest Art Gallery, located in downtown Los Angeles, does it again and brings you a most special exhibit from a place where there is very little freedom of anything, let alone expression.
Street art in Iran is most unwelcome by the government and curating this show drew many challenges that are rarely, if ever seen here in the good old U.S. of A. More then two dozen pieces were deemed unsuitable for shipping to the U.S after being inspected by a postal worker in Tabriz, Iran. Due to the political and sensitive nature, Crewest had to exercise caution with added security, major crowd control and inspection of back packs. A small price to pay for beauty and freedom.

The end is nigh-- at least for Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails. Spanish and European Champion, FC Barcelona, traveled to the Rose Bowl Saturday night to face the Los Angeles Galaxy in an international friendly. The match, which drew over 93,000 fans, was the largest attended soccer match in the United States since the 1994 World Cup. The Catalonian side, featuring world class players such as Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry, proved too much for the Galaxy to handle. Winning 2-1 on goals from Pedro Rodriguez and Jeffren Suarez. Embattled Galaxy Midfielder, David Beckham, played in his first match since the incident with a supporter from a few weeks prior at the Home Depot Center. With each touch of the ball, Beckham was showered with loud boos from the largely Barca supporting crowd and with a trademark free kick goal at the close of the first half, silenced many of the boos. The match was the third world class caliber match in Los Angeles within the last two weeks and in all the matches drew almost 200,000 fans to watch the beautiful game.

Israeli (now LA-based) goa/psy/metal trance group Infected Mushroom played to a packed crowd at the Vanguard on Saturday night. The group, which has been touring almost non-stop since 1999--including a stop here just three weeks ago at the Electric Daisy Carnival--is again on the road promoting its new album, "Legend of the Black Shwarma." Unlike most electronic performances, a live Infected Mushroom show is not just someone with a laptop and turntables; featuring a guitarist and live drummer, Infected Mushroom is a dynamic, full-fledged band. The set stretched past the two-hour mark and kept the crowd grooving to influences of nu-metal and New Wave (including a cover of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus") until the wee hours of the morning.

Surf giant Billabong held its annual Design For Humanity benefit at the Avalon in Hollywood again this year. THE LEGENDARY BELMONT TUNNEL
“A Tribute to the Birth of Los Angeles Graffiti Art”
With the influx of Hip Hop culture from the East Coast in the early 1980’s, the graffiti movement began to take shape in Los Angeles. Young graffiti artists began searching for their own voice and spaces to create. One space that became crucial to that development was the Belmont Tunnel. Due to its central location in Downtown LA and open layout surrounded with massive walls, it quickly became the city’s most popular urban canvas. Over the next 20+ years, Belmont became a meeting place for hundreds of developing graffiti artists to hone their craft, settle their differences through graff battles, and pass on codes of ethics to the next generation.
Although the tunnel no longer exists, Crewest Gallery in Downtown Los Angeles helps it live forever with the brilliant exhibition which brought out iconic luminaries in this chosen artistic field.

Depeche Mode literally shut down blocks of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street to give a free concert to tens of thousands of devoted fans. All was calm in a sea of black as the crowd danced and sang along to their favorite hits and were treated to brand spanking new tunes. The celebration was brought on to launch their twelve album release since 1981, "Sounds of the Universe."

On Saturday, April 11, KCRW hosted RadioActive, a Spring dance party featuring the station’s own skilled selectors at The Legendary Park Plaza in downtown Los Angeles, a beautiful space that is not normally open to the public. This was the first time KCRW put on a dance event featuring station DJ’s even though many of them have headlined some of the biggest venues in the world independently -- from the dance mecca of Ibiza and Central Park’s Summer Stage in NYC to Coachella and the Winter Music Conference.

3/27/09 -- Lucha va Voom's Girlie Girl Catfight! / Cleavage & Carnage

The Girlie Girl Catfight Show followed the three Boo's of entertainment success: booze, boobies and booties. And all in great abundance. Created by the minds behind Lucha Va Voom, the Girlie Girl Catfight Show is pro wrestling, burlesque, trapeze and comedy all rolled in to one sexy package. The El Rey was sold out on Friday for the pirate themed show. Sword fights, a strip tease and pirate prop comic Parrot Top all added to the mayhem that had the crowd wootin' and hollerin' for more.
